Enhancing Social Visibility: Implementing Open Graph Tags in FutbolFem

Improving Social Media Presence

In our latest updates to FutbolFem, a React-based project dedicated to women's football, we identified a need to improve how our content appears when shared across social media platforms. When users shared links to our site, the preview images and metadata were often missing or unoptimized, leading to poor click-through rates.

The Challenge

Social media crawlers require specific HTML meta tags in the document head to correctly identify the title, description, and preview image for a shared URL. Without these, platforms often fall back to generic or empty previews, which fail to engage potential visitors.

The Solution: Open Graph Implementation

We implemented Open Graph protocol tags to ensure consistent, visually appealing link previews. By dynamically injecting these tags, we control exactly what a user sees when our links are shared.

const SocialMeta = ({ title, imageUrl, description }) => (
  <head>
    <meta property="og:title" content={title} />
    <meta property="og:image" content={imageUrl} />
    <meta property="og:description" content={description} />
    <meta property="og:type" content="website" />
  </head>
);

This component ensures that every page provides the social graph with the necessary context, making our content stand out in a crowded social media feed. It acts like a digital "business card" that tells platforms exactly how to present our articles.

Key Decisions

  1. Component-based injection: Using React to handle meta tags dynamically ensures that metadata updates alongside content.
  2. Standardized metadata: We adopted the Open Graph protocol as it provides the broadest compatibility across Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Results

  • Improved click-through rates for shared links.
  • Professional visual presentation on social channels.
  • Consistent brand identity across external platforms.

Lessons Learned

Never underestimate the power of metadata. Even a highly functional application can struggle to grow if it doesn't communicate well with the platforms where discovery happens.
